How Stolen Content Shows Up on Instagram
Instagram is built around photos and short videos, so a stolen image can be reposted in a feed post, a Reel or a Story. The person who posts it usually has nothing to do with your own accounts.
Creators commonly report a few patterns: fake profiles that use their photos to look real, catfish accounts that use those photos to talk to people in direct messages, promotion accounts that use stolen images to advertise other pages or sites, and accounts that collect and repost several creators' promotional photos.
How Instagram Handles a Copyright Report
Instagram's list of required information asks for your contact details, a description of the work, direct links to the content you are reporting, and a declaration, made under penalty of perjury, that the report is accurate and that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner, with a signature. Instagram may ask for more information after a report is submitted.
Accounts that repeatedly post infringing content can be affected under Instagram's repeat infringer policy: Instagram says such an account may be disabled or its ability to post may be limited. What happens to an account is Instagram's decision.
Instagram does not publish a response time. Our estimate is 24 to 48 hours for a complete report; it is an estimate, not a guarantee, and some cases take longer.
What a Valid Instagram DMCA Notice Must Include
A DMCA notice identifies your work and the link to each post, Reel or Story, gives the sender's contact details, and includes a good faith statement, a statement under penalty of perjury that the notice is accurate and the sender is authorized, and a signature (US Copyright Office). Copyright, Impersonation and Intimate Images
A copyright report covers your own photos and videos. Other misuse on Instagram has its own report, and AMP files these as your authorized representative too:

Instagram handles impersonation through a separate report, not a DMCA notice; when a fake account also posts your photos, those photos can be reported for copyright as well. For intimate photos shared without consent, Instagram says trained reviewers remove images that break its Community Standards and that it uses photo-matching technology to help stop the same image being shared again on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. For paid content that you made and own, the copyright report is the route we use.
Filing as Your Agent, and What Happens to Your Name
We file every Instagram report as your authorized agent, signed on behalf of Adult Model Protection, and a person on our takedown team checks each notice before it is sent. Your legal name is only shared with your consent, and only with a recipient that needs it and keeps it confidential; you can withdraw that consent at any time from your account.
The rights holder named on the report is your model (stage) name, and Instagram may show it to the uploader: Instagram says it regularly gives the person who posted the content the rights owner's name and the details of the report, also when an authorized representative files.
The poster can file a counter-notice, and Instagram may restore the content after 10 to 14 business days unless it is told within that period that the copyright owner has filed a court action (US Copyright Office). Our takedown team tells you when a counter-notice arrives and explains your options; the decision is yours, and we do not give legal advice.

After the Report: Removal Checks and Reposts
After a report is sent, we check whether each post is gone, through page checks and manual checks, and you follow every request and its status in your dashboard. When a platform does not act, our takedown team sends a follow-up.
Our regular scans, reverse image searches with your content assets and manual searches look for your content again, and a repost that turns up gets a new notice. You get a notification when a scan finds a new copy. Stories disappear after 24 hours unless they are added to a highlight, so a Story can be gone before a scan reaches it; when you spot one, submit the link from your dashboard.
Content fingerprinting, which would also catch cropped or edited copies, is in development and not a current feature. Your content assets are used only to search for copies and are never shared with third parties.
When Copies Appear on Other Sites
Removing an Instagram post does not remove copies elsewhere. Our scans cover Google, Bing and Yandex and more than 500 known leak and piracy sites, and copies we find there get their own takedown notices, to the site, its host or, when a site ignores us, its registrar, hosting provider or payment processor.
Search engine de-indexing asks Google and Bing to drop infringing pages from their results; it is unlimited on every paid plan. For fake profiles on several platforms, see catfishing and impersonation removal; for reposts on TikTok, see TikTok DMCA.
Instagram's impersonation help page mentions an impersonation protection benefit for Meta Verified subscribers, a paid subscription. A visible watermark with your name or handle makes reposts easier to recognize. Neither stops a repost on its own.
